Japanese Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Shinzo Abe stated at the 10th ASEAN-Japan Summit held in January 2007 that the GOJ would contribute USD 52,000,000 to projects related to the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which covered regional economic integration activities between ASEAN and Japan as well as within ASEAN.
Approximately USD 40,000,000 of that total was disbursed for Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Viet Nam, with some USD 20,000,000 earmarked for projects related to the Development Triangle cross-border area of Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Viet Nam. The remaining USD 20,000,000 was allocated to projects for improving efficiency of logistics and distribution along the East-West Economic Corridor and the Southern Economic Corridor in the Mekong Sub-Region.
The remaining USD 12,000,000 was apportioned to support projects for promoting economic cooperation activities, including capacity building and technical assistance, for the mutual benefits of ASEAN and Japan in order to liberalise and facilitate trade and investment and to improve the well-being of the peoples of the region.
