Workshop on Mitigation and Strategic Policy for Combating Microplastic Pollution for Marine and Freshwater Fisheries in Southeast Asia Region
JAKARTA, 2 July 2025 – The “Workshop on Mitigation and Strategic Policy to Combat Microplastic Pollution in Marine and Freshwater Fisheries in Southeast Asia Region” was successfully convened in Jakarta, Indonesia. This significant event was hosted by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Indonesia, in collaboration with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC).
The workshop brought together government agencies involved in fisheries management from ASEAN Member States (AMS). The first day focused on comprehensive discussions regarding the regional perspectives on microplastic sources, their impacts, and potential solutions. The second day included a practical visit to the Nizam Zachman Landing Port, where participants observed facilities to reduce plastic debris.
This Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF)-funded project is dedicated to enhancing regional collaborative research and capacity building within the fisheries sector. It specifically aims to integrate scientific knowledge into regional policies and monitoring efforts, aligning with the priority areas outlined in the “ASEAN Framework of Action on Marine Debris.”
