ASEAN Discusses Gender Inequality Issues in and through Sports
The ASEAN Secretariat successfully held a hybrid event in Jakarta with ten selected ASEAN Women’s Sports Ambassadors participating virtually. Director Tomohiko Arai (International Affairs Division Japan Sports Agency SOMS Leader) delivered his opening remarks “Under the cooperation between ASEAN and Japan, women in sports have emerged as one of the main areas of sports cooperation.”
The event was closed with closing remarks by the Deputy Secretary-General for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community, Ekkaphab Phanthavong. He highlighted the legacy of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics “as the most gender-balanced game since its inception,” Phanthavong later added, “Learning from our discussions with ambassadors and sports experts, we all need to think beyond the achievements of women and girls in activities and competitions. We have to start paying attention to the leadership and career paths of women in sports institutions, as well as their safety and protection.”
The #WeScore Campaign is part of the ASEAN-Japan Actions on Sports which is supported by the Government of Japan through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
