JENESYS2023 aims to promote mutual trust and understanding among the peoples of Japan, ASEAN Member States, and Timor-Leste, to build a basis for future friendship and cooperation, as well as to encourage an understanding of various aspects of Japan. The project is supported by the Government of Japan through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF). These are the highlights of JENESYS2023 reported by Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE) in August 2023:

21 August: Two events of JENESYS2023 Online Japan-Visit Advanced Program for JENESYS ASEAN Alumni with the themes “Environment/Disaster Prevention” and “Population Problem” were held on 7 – 17 August 2023. After the nine-day program, the 100 participants deepened their understanding of their respective themes and Japanese culture, and enjoyed exchanges with alumni and Japanese students from ASEAN countries.

7 August: Eighty-nine ASEAN and Timor Leste high school students and their leaders came to Japan for the JENESYS ASEAN-Japan High School Students Exchange on 25 July – 2 August 2023. The programme was held in hot weather, but they enjoyed themselves energetically. In the Tokyo program, they visited companies and universities to learn about Japanese technology and education, while in the regional program, they visited Aomori, Tochigi, Aichi, and Hiroshima prefectures, where they interacted with many Japanese people and made many memories through school exchanges and weekend home stays.

14 August: JENESYS Brunei-Japan Energy Technology Exchange was carried out on 2 – 8 August 2023. Six participants involved in the energy field from Brunei visited Japan and spent a week in Tokyo and Hakuba Village, Nagano Prefecture. They also enjoyed cultural experiences such as the Yukata festival and fireworks.

18 August: On 8 – 17 August 2023, JENESYS ASEAN-Japan Golden Friendship Exchange programme was held. About 200 participants enjoyed the online exchange in Tokyo, Okinawa, Hokkaido, Kochi and Gifu.
