ASEAN SDGs Frontrunner Cities Programme: The First Regional Workshop
The First Regional Workshop (the Inception Workshop) of the ASEAN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Frontrunner Cities Programme (SDGs-FC) was held on 26- 28 September 2018 in Tokyo and Nagano, Japan. There were about 70 participants comprising: (i) representatives from all ASEAN Member States (AMS) (except Brunei Darussalam and Singapore); (ii) the ASEAN Secretariat; (iii) local governments nominated as participating cities of SDGs-FCs; (iii) IGES (the implementing agency) and; (iv) resource persons from United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), UN-Habitat’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, Japan’s Local Policy Design Office and the Japan-ASEAN Centre.
The SDGs-FC is a new initiative under the ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (AWGESC) supported by the Government of Japan through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF). It aims to support ASEAN cities to achieve inclusive, sustainable, resilient and dynamic development in line with ASEAN Vision 2020. The programme strategically builds on the ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable Cities Model Cities Programme (2011 – 2017), which had supported and recognised 40 frontrunner cities in their innovative practices/policies in bottom-up environmental management.
