In March 2023, Prime Minister KISHIDA Fumio announced a new contribution of USD 100 million to the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) on the occasion of the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. The new funding (JAIF 3.0) aims to promote concrete initiatives based on the Joint Statement of the 23rd ASEAN-Japan Summit on Cooperation on ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP), which noted that both the AOIP and Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) concept share relevant fundamental principles in promoting peace and cooperation, such as openness, transparency, inclusivity, and rule-based frameworks, support ASEAN’s efforts in mainstreaming the AOIP in ASEAN’s cooperation with all external partners, with a view to leading the realisation of a free and open international order based on the rule of law in the region, and implement the Joint Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation and its Implementation Plan adopted at the Commemorative Summit for the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation in December 2023.
