This month, 15 young government officials from ASEAN countries, including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, and East Timor, visited the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts as a part of the activities within the IAI Attachment Programme. In a short period of time, they experienced the world of crafts and participated in an intensive 1.5-hour program.
One of the programme of the events was a workshop inviting members of "Kyoto Sudare Kawasaki" to create hand-woven coasters in the shape of a five-story pagoda using bamboo and reeds.
Kyosudare Kawasaki is one of the few sudare craftsmen who sew blinds by hand. He insists on hand-stitching so that they can be easily repaired. With proper repairs, sudare blinds can be used for 100 .
The IAI Attachment Programme for Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Viet Nam (CLMV) and Timor-Leste Officers at the ASEAN Secretariat (2024/2025) project is funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
