Strengthening Eel Research and Partnerships in Sulawesi Island, Indonesia

To strengthen coordination on the management of tropical anguillid eel resources in Sulawesi, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) Inland Fishery Resources Development and Management Department (IFRDMD), together with the SEAFDEC Secretariat, conducted a visit to Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, on 12 December 2025. The mission was led by IFRDMD Deputy Chief Toru Shimoda and joined by a SEAFDEC Secretariat delegation led by Deputy Secretary-General Mr. Koichi Tahara. The visit aimed at exchanging field-based information, strengthening partnerships with local stakeholders, and supporting responsible and sustainable management of eel resources.

Overall, the visits highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration among research institutions, local stakeholders, and the private sector. They also reaffirmed the commitment of IFRDMD and SEAFDEC to promoting the responsible use and long-term sustainability of tropical anguillid eel resources in Indonesia. This project is supported through the Japan–ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
