ASEAN and Japan collaborate to promote the concept of smart cities in each member city of the ASEAN Smart City Network (ASCN). The first ASEAN-Japan Smart Cities Network High-Level Meeting was held in October 2019, gathered approximately 800 participants. The Meeting aims to share the ASEAN countries’ needs and Japan’s know-how and technologies, also providing a place for matching among public institutions and private organizations.

The Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) project was endorsed by the ASEAN Working Group on Chemicals and Waste and ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment and funded through the JAIF. The overall goal of the project is to contribute to the prevention of the adverse impacts of mercury on health and the environment through the environmentally sound management of used thermometers and sphygmomanometers in the ASEAN Member States. The project duration is from October 2019 to September 2021. The target countries for this project are Indonesia and the Philippines. Project activities include development of guidelines on environmentally sound management of mercury-containing medical measuring devices, inventory, capacity building through in-country workshops and regional workshop.

In May 2019, the Japanese Government through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) provided the ASEAN Regional Mine Action Center (ARMAC) with an approximate amount of USD 156,000 funding to enhance Mine Risk Education (MRE) in a number of countries across the ASEAN region.
The funding go towards supporting a one-year project to develop a comprehensive and integrated approach to MRE that will build on the best practices of ASEAN Member States in educating their populations on the dangers of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW). This project includes enriching ARMAC’s dissemination of mine/ERW related information to the public through a redesign of its website and social media accounts.

The ASEAN Project on Disaster Risk Reduction by Integrating Climate Change Projection into Floodand Landslide Risk Assessment (ASEAN DRR-CCA) is an initiative under the ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management Working Group on Prevention and Mitigation, supported by the Government of Japan through Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
The project aims to demonstrate the integration of climate projections into flood and landslide risk assessment; and equip ASEAN Member States with tools and techniques on risk assessment and mapping for better land-use planning. This will ensure they are better equipped with appropriate solutions to address future risks.

JAIF has been one of the key support mechanisms for a range of ASEAN disaster management functions – in particular elements such as the Disaster Emergency Logistic System for ASEAN (DELSA) and the AHA Centre Executive (ACE) Programme – throughout the AHA Centre’s first six years of existence.
Since its establishment in November 2011, the AHA Centre has benefitted from over USD 33 million for a range of projects, with over USD 7 million currently designated to projects in the pipeline, seeing the Government of Japan – through JAIF – forms the largest contributor to the AHA Centre’s programmes thus far.

As the world becomes more interconnected and more devices are linked to the Internet, maintaining a safe and secure environment for citizens and businesses is an enormous challenge for governments, especially when cyber criminals constantly deploy innovative malicious tools to attack unsuspecting targets around the world. Moreover, the shortage of competent cybersecurity experts in the public and critical information infrastructure (CII) sectors further increases cybersecurity risk and exposes nations to potential cyber-attacks that could severely impact social and economic well-being.

The ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Capacity Building Centre (AJCCBC) was funded by Japan ASEAN Integration Fund with the aim to develop a cybersecurity workforce of 700+ over 4 years to enhance the capacity of cybersecurity experts and specialists in the AMS by providing trainings and other activities to participants from AMS.

The ASEAN SDGs Frontrunner Cities Programme (SDGs-FC) is a new initiative under the ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities (AWGESC) funded by the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF). It aims to support ASEAN cities to achieve inclusive, sustainable, resilient and dynamic development in line with ASEAN Vision 2020. The programme strategically builds on the ASEAN ESC Model Cities programme (2011 – 2017), which had supported and recognised 40 frontrunner cities in their innovative practices/policies in bottom-up environmental management.

Supported by the ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC) and under the framework of the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF), this project provided a platform for 22 GMS-UC Member Universities from Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam to engage in a series of activities and workshops in areas of leadership management, teaching and research, and internationalization and cross-border higher education through experience sharing.

The series of ASEAN Now and the Future – Connectivity and Economic Corridors, look back over the history of cooperation for peace, stability, growth and prosperity between Japan and ASEAN. It explains how the broadcasting stations of the four participating countries in this program production assistance project – Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar – tackled the program production work.

The project on Development of VTS Operator’s Capacity implemented by Japan Aids to Navigation Association (JANA) is supported by Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
The opening ceremony was held on 23 October 2018 attended by Director General of the Marine Department, Malaysia, Vice director General, Japan Coast Guard, Dean of IALA WWA, 20 trainees, instructors and other guests.

This project will develop and strengthen capacities in taxonomic knowledge to identify and manage quarantine risks associated with agriculture commodities and to accurately diagnose pests and diseases among the ASEAN Member States (AMS).

Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) through the ASEAN Secretariat funded Phase 1 and Phase 2 of this project, from 2015 – 2020.

This project is aimed to promote bioenergy development for sustainable agriculture and strengthen national policy on sustainable bioenergy developement in ASEAN. Recognising the multiple importance and benefits of biomass energy for agricultural communites and rural development, the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF), under the Emergency Economic Assitance (EEA) has offered a funding facility to support this project.
