Introduction of the New JAIF Project on Tropical Anguillid Eels at DOF Myanmar

On 4 July 2017, the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) Mission, led by Dr. Kaoru Ishii, SEAFDEC Deputy Secretary-General, visited the Department of Fisheries (DOF) Myanmar in Nay Pyi Taw, and paid a courtesy call to Mr. Myint Zin Htoo, Deputy Director General of DOF and concurrent SEAFDEC Alternate Council Director for Myanmar as the representative of the Director General.
With the new two-year (2017-2019) project on “Enhancing Sustainable Utilization and Management Scheme of Tropical Anguillid Eel Resources in Southeast Asia” to be supported by the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) and to be introduced among the ASEAN Member States, the Mission provided brief information on the project background, purposes, work plans, and preparation to be carried out by SEAFDEC together with fisheries officials of the DOF Myanmar. During the discussion, SEAFDEC requested the DOF Myanmar to appoint three contact persons to support activities in coordination with the SEAFDEC staff during 2017-2019, i.e. arrangement of eel issues, data gathering, collecting catch statistics, and considering the national resource management plan and scheme on eel fisheries in Myanmar, in order to ensure effective and smooth project implementation.
