The 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation: Promotion of ASEAN-Japan Cooperation in Line of the AOIP
Official Development Assistance (ODA) Mail Magazine No.460 issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Japan published an article titled “50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation: Promotion of ASEAN-Japan Cooperation in Line with the AOIP”.
The article begins with remarks from the Ambassador of Mission of Japan to ASEAN KIYA Masahiko emphasising that the year 2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. In 2019, ASEAN Leaders adopted the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) to guide ASEAN’s engagement in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions. Japan was one of the first to express its full support for AOIP, and in 2020 Japan adopted a joint statement on AOIP cooperation with ASEAN leaders. Based on this joint statement, Japan is promoting cooperation with ASEAN that contributes to the essential principles of AOIP, such as the rule of law, in line with the AOIP’s four priority areas of cooperation (maritime cooperation, connectivity, UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and economic and other possible areas of cooperation).
The article continues with Mission of Japan to ASEAN officials introducing projects supported by the Government of Japan through Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) in each of the four AOIP priority areas, among others JENESYS programme, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Implementation Plan Training in ASEAN (GIPTA),The Establishment of a Disaster Emergency Logistic System for ASEAN (DELSA) – Phase II: Satellite Warehouse, ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Capacity Building Centre (Step 2-2) are currently underway.
