ASEAN-Japan Summit, President Jokowi Invites to Focus on Regional Economic Recovery
In his speech at the 23rd ASEAN-Japan Summit, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) invited ASEAN and Japan to focus on the economic recovery of the region affected by the COVID-19 Pandemic. The President invited Japan to work together with ASEAN countries given the great potential of both parties. “The first thing is to work together to accelerate the economic recovery itself,” Jokowi encouraged. He was of the opinion that ASEAN could become Japan’s main partner in diversifying its supply chain as well as expanding investment. For this reason, Jokowi considered the establishment of the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases to be crucial and very urgent. Jokowi believes that this can be achieved if each party puts forward a win-win paradigm and collaborates with one another. ASEAN and Japan themselves can establish more concrete cooperation through the framework of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific.
The Feasibility Study on the Establishment of “ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases” is currently on-going and supported by the Government of Japan through Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).
