Background

A broadened and strengthened ASEAN and Japan partnership has been seen in the last four decades—spanning cooperation on political, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of development. While unprecedented gains have been achieved, awareness and understanding of such commitment still remain distant among the general public, especially in Japan. Recognizing the role of facilitating people-to-people and cultural exchanges, such as through a music festival, in cultivating greater friendship and cooperation, ASEAN and Japan organize the ASEAN-Japan Music Festival as Celebration of the 45th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. The occasion is a second of its nature, with the first held in 2013 to commemorate the 40th year of ASEAN-Japan partnership.

What is the project aiming for?

The 2nd ASEAN-Japan Music Festival demonstrates ASEAN and Japan’s continuous commitment toward a “shared vision, shared identity, and shared future.” The festival showcases the following:

One-day music festival to be held in Japan, with participation of artists from ASEAN member states and Japan; and
Production of a TV programme of the festival to be disseminated in all ten ASEAN member states and Japan.

Japan’s Foreign Minister Taro Kono “explained Japan’s position on enhancing the relationship with ASEAN towards the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings to be held in July and the ASEAN-related Summit Meetings to be held in November in 2018. In this context, Minister Kono noted that this year marks the 45th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation, and introduced the ASEAN-Japan Music Festival to be held in Japan in October.”

The 2nd ASEAN-Japan Music Festival as Celebration of the 45th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation supports the overall goal of the Strategic Plan for Culture 2016-2025 “to deepen an ASEAN mindset and facilitate intercultural dialogue among the peoples of ASEAN through the engagement of various stakeholders in raising awareness on, and appreciation for, the histories, cultures, arts, traditions and values of the ASEAN region.” It also promotes “heart-to-heart understanding” as outlined in the Revised Implementation Plan of the Vision Statement on ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. The music festival is slated on 4 October 2018.
